CUSTOM MADE CUSHIONS

Cushions are such an important design element in a room.  Carefully considered, tailored cushions take into account all the components of a space and help to pull a room together.  They help convey the feel you would like the room to have.  They can add colour, texture, interest, depth and personality. Cushions dress a sofa, chair or bed and invite you in to sit down, get comfortable and relax. Much thought goes into curating a selection of fabrics that work together and the end result is custom made cushions that are unique, special to you and undoubtedly cushions that you will have and cherish for many years to come.  View cushions for sale on our online store.

FABRICS FOR CUSHIONS

Selecting exactly the right fabric can take time and that is why we have an extensive fabric library of both large well-known brands such as Designers Guild, Christian Lacroix, Osborne and Little, Manuel Canovas, Sanderson etc. as well as small textile design studios that offer customised printed fabrics. If we do not have the design in our showroom that will suit your room, we source more fabric options from our suppliers, so there is always ample choice.

We also feel a responsibility to the environment, therefore have sourced some ranges of fabrics that are sustainable, environmentally friendly, have no harmful substances and that are printed in Australia.

Things to consider when selecting your fabric are:

  • Design. How it will suit your interior?

  • Fabric composition.  Does it need to be a natural fibre, hard wearing, washable, fade resistant?

  • Colour. Do you want a strong contrast or a more subtle complementary palette?

  • Texture.  Do you want it to be organic and natural, silky and luxurious or soft to touch?

SHAPES AND SIZES OF CUSHIONS

Rather than make every cushion the same shape and size, we like to mix things up a little, so it looks more organic and interesting. Cushions can be made in any size you desire. It is important that the size of your cushions is in proportion with where it is being placed.

The shapes of custom-made cushions that we offer are:

  • Square

  • Rectangle

  • Round

  • Boxed

  • Shaped to fit a piece of furniture

FINISHES OF CUSHIONS

The finish on your custom designed cushion is what can really make it special and unique.  Contrast piping can highlight a colour that is in the fabric, frame the cushion, and give it a finished look.  Contrast backed cushions gives you the flexibility of turning the cushion around to show another design or colour.  Adding a trimming to your cushion can take it to a whole other level.  We have a vast selection of trimmings on offer from small, delicate cords to colourful feather trims that have been collected on trips to France. Trimmings is really like adding some jewellery to your cushion as you will see on our online store. Here is a list of some of the finishes we can add to your cushions:

  • Contrast backing or piping.

  • Self-piping.

  • Top stitching.

  • Flanges, frills, bands.

  • Trimmings eg. Flanged cord, brush fringe, feathers, beads, bullions, tassels.

DESIGN PLACEMENT

We do not like to leave anything to chance. It is important to have the most aesthetically pleasing section of the fabric on your cushion and preferably without too much fabric wastage.  With every patterned fabric we make into a cushion we photograph what our artistic, trained eye thinks looks best. We often email a photo to show our client for approval prior to it being made up. This attention to detail is something that we pride ourselves on and shows how much thought and careful consideration that goes into each cushion.

INSERTS FOR CUSHIONS

The cushion insert makes a difference to how your cushion will look and feel. All our inserts are Australian made and the feathers are ethically sourced.  We find duck feather to be the best for scatter cushions as it fills the corners of the cushion nicely is soft and lasts a lifetime. The standard insert we use on all our custom-made cushions are 100% duck feather, however there are other options depending on your needs:

  • Duck feather - which is our standard soft insert.

  • Down feather - which is super soft and ultra-luxurious.

  • Dacron - which is perfect for those with allergies.

  • Foam - which keeps its shape and great for window seats.  We like to wrap it in dacron for a more finished look.

  • Outdoor foam - which water can pass through which is perfect if it’s out in the rain.

  • Blend of duck and down feather -which is a nice upgrade on the 100% feather.

  • Blend of foam and feather - which is a good option for a cushion that will get a lot of use and don’t want to be plumping the cushion up often.
